1966 Flag Series Limited Edition Collectors Prints

A series of limited edition prints are now available. There are 82 players in the collection. 72 are the players from the original set of football cards, plus an additional 10 Victorian players who were photographed but left out of the original set of cards to make way for the Western Australian players.

Each player is available as the individual player edition limited to 100 prints or as part of their special team set edition limited to only 25 prints.

Framed Collectors Edition Print sample of Sam Newman and Ted Whitten

Each print comes as a custom-printed 17 inch-square photograph, printed on Kodak Endura Metallic Paper, archival for up to 200 years. They are beautifully framed, mounted with a nameplate, and come with an individual certificate of authenticity. The editions are strictly limited, once they’re gone, that’s it.

Available at just $595 each, (for individual players), these prints will become collectable in their own right, but at a price within everyone’s salary cap!

“We knew that the Flag Series had more cards to it. But we didn’t know who they were until now. It is a major find”.

             - David Studham, Historian, MCG Museum Dept.

Card History of Scanlens

Scanlens is often fondly remembered for the introduction of Scanlens Football cards, which have since become collectors items.Scanlens Twins Logo

If you are older than 30, you probably remember collecting football cards as kid, and you only had one choice, Scanlens. Scanlens made one set per year from 1963 to 1991, and you could buy cards from almost every milkbar. Pack prices were inexpensive enough to buy a few at a time given your pocket-money and you absolutely loved the gum. As there were only about 5 cards in a pack, it became addictive to collect and trade the cards with friends so you could say “I have the set”.

1966 Scanlens Football Cards of Bob Skilton, Ernie Hug and David Parkin - original cardsYou loved flipping them, putting them in your bicycle spokes and generally had a great time with your cards before rubber-banding them together and stuffing them in a shoebox in your wardrobe. If you were lucky, your mother didn’t throw them out when you were older. These various reasons have made the cards rarer and harder to find in mint condition today.

Many consider cards from the 60’s to be valuable pieces of Australiana, sometimes fetching more than $30 000 for a full set.

As every serious collector knows, one item stands out from the pack, Scanlens 1966 ‘Flag Series’ footy cards.

In fact the 1966 Flag Series of cards were destined to become the set most sought-after and highly prized by collectors.

Recently, the original photographs taken for these cards were discovered.  This find represents a major piece of VFL / AFL history. We have lovingly restored the original pictures to produce images of such stunning clarity, that it feels like you can reach back over 40 years and touch your heroes.

In total there are 82 images. There were 72 numbered cards featuring the top 60 players from the 12 VFL clubs of that year, plus 12 from the WAFL, (10 were left out to include the WAFL players. Those who were photographed but left out include Sam Newman, Graeme John, Terry Waters and John Northey.)

The AFL-X Men

The AFL-X Men (AFL Combined Past Players & Officials Association Inc) are an organization who support former players of the VFL – AFL, who have essentially been pioneers of the modern professional competition, and have sustained significant injuries that have resulted in hardship in many cases.AFL X-Men Logo

X-Men president Ron O’Dwyer says younger fans may not understand that players of past decades were not well paid – for example, Ron earned a $20 match payment and won a leather bag as the ‘Best on Ground’ in the 1960 Grand Final.

Many former players have chronic injuries and require surgery to reconstruct shoulders, repair wrists and knees, replace hips or fuse vertebrae as a result of their playing days. Some can no longer work as a result of their football injuries and many can’t afford private health insurance.

“This isn’t about cash; this is about caring – this is about former champions, icon players, being freed from a life of pain and unaffordable medical treatment.”

The other major role of the AFL X-Men is supporting the Football junior leagues. The AFL X-Men assist local/ regional football and netball clubs, by providing skills training, mentoring programs, sports administration, player appearances and fundraising. Currently they are focusing their efforts on the VCFL, supporting children in families affected by the drought.
